Medium
Medium took a strong stance against AI-generated content. In March 2024, the platform demonetized AI-generated content entirely. In April 2024, Medium banned AI writing from behind its paywall effective May 1. CEO Tony Stubblebine's strategy relies on human curators to spot AI content, stating AI detection tools are "not good enough for platform use." The company frames itself as "not leaning into AI at all," filtering AI content from recommendations while allowing disclosed AI writing only for "General Distribution" outside the paywall.

See all →In August 2022, Medium's new CEO Tony Stubblebine laid off 29 employees (30% of staff) from operations, marketing, design, and creator relations just three weeks after taking over from founder Evan Williams. Stubblebine explained the reasoning behind letting go of employees was to reshape the company after growth slowed. This followed a 2017 layoff of 50 employees (one-third of workforce) under Williams when Medium pivoted away from advertising. By late 2023, Medium had ~80 employees, down from 100 at the CEO transition.
