Midjourney is a named defendant in Andersen v. Stability AI et al., a class-action copyright lawsuit filed by artists in January 2023. The complaint alleges Midjourney trained its image generation models on billions of scraped images without artist consent and marketed the ability to generate art "in the style of" specific artists. In August 2024, a federal judge allowed core copyright-infringement claims to proceed to discovery. Midjourney founder David Holz has said he was unaware of legal issues when building the model.
