Midjourney

Major entertainment studios filed copyright infringement lawsuits against Midjourney in 2025. Disney and Universal sued in June 2025, alleging Midjourney "pirated entire libraries of their most iconic characters—Darth Vader, Elsa, the Minions—without permission." Warner Bros. Discovery followed in September 2025 with similar claims. An artist class action (4,700+ artists) alleges Midjourney used a list including Norman Rockwell and Wes Anderson to train its system without authorization. Midjourney filed answers raising "fair use" as defense.

Midjourney is a named defendant in Andersen v. Stability AI et al., a class-action copyright lawsuit filed by artists in January 2023. The complaint alleges Midjourney trained its image generation models on billions of scraped images without artist consent and marketed the ability to generate art "in the style of" specific artists. In August 2024, a federal judge allowed core copyright-infringement claims to proceed to discovery. Midjourney founder David Holz has said he was unaware of legal issues when building the model.

A spreadsheet submitted as evidence in copyright litigation lists thousands of artists whose work Midjourney's AI "can successfully mimic or imitate." The platform allows users to specifically request styles of named artists without consent or compensation. Plaintiffs argue AI-generated art is built on "human intelligence and creative expression" without involved parties' consent or credit, economically harming working artists whose styles are replicated by paying subscribers.
