Emmett Shear

Emmett Shear has publicly advocated for AI safety, estimating a 5-50% "probability of doom" from advanced AI. In a June 2023 podcast appearance on "The Logan Bartlett Show," Shear said: "I buy his doom argument, I buy the chain [of thought] and the logic" regarding Eliezer Yudkowsky's AI existential risk concerns. He stated that AI development should be slowed 10-20% and called for "some kind of fire alarm" and "international collaboration and treaties about some sort of AI test ban treaty." When discussing 25-50% risk estimates, Shear said: "That should cause you to shit your pants."

Multiple former Twitch employees criticized Emmett Shear's leadership during his tenure as CEO. A former employee described him as "eternally condescending to staff" who "continuously listened to whoever was playing politics best." Streamers alleged Twitch under Shear "repeatedly swept accounts of harassment and abuse under the rug," and one partner revealed evidence of Shear "dismissing, and even laughing about, ongoing sexual harassment against content creators."

As Twitch CEO, Emmett Shear stated in a September 2019 interview that Twitch is "very explicitly not a free speech platform." He explained that he was part of a group of entrepreneurs in 2005 who believed in open web communities but realized "how much you could empower bad actors by doing that." Shear articulated: "The one with good, strong moderation, in many ways, is actually the place with freer speech" and "People who want to do things that are bad, like spread toxic ideas and messages, should be free to do so, I'm a huge believer in free speech. We're just not obligated to give them a platform."
