Roblox agreed to a $12.2 million settlement with Alabama, announced April 21, 2026, after the state attorney general alleged the platform's chat and moderation systems let unknown adults contact and groom children. Roblox agreed to make age verification mandatory for chat access, off by default until verified — one of a wave of similar attorney-general actions against the platform in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
On October 29, 2025, Character.AI announced it would ban users under 18 from open-ended chatbot conversations, effective November 25, 2025. The decision came after multiple wrongful death lawsuits (including the Sewell Setzer case), an FTC investigation into AI companion apps, and a Bureau of Investigative Journalism investigation revealing harmful bots talking to apparent children. The company implemented age verification using behavioral analysis, third-party tools, and facial recognition.
Elon Musk privately pressured Reddit CEO Steve Huffman to ban subreddits critical of the Trump administration in March 2025. Following the exchange, Reddit temporarily banned r/WhitePeopleTwitter for 72 hours for "policy violations." As Discord's co-founder and then-CEO, Citron testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 31, 2024, in a hearing on child sexual exploitation on social platforms, alongside the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X, and Snap. Discord's written testimony said users who upload child sexual abuse material are permanently banned and reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, but lawmakers from both parties said moderation had not kept pace with predatory contact on the platform.

As Twitch CEO, Emmett Shear stated in a September 2019 interview that Twitch is "very explicitly not a free speech platform."
